Monday, October 20, 2008 - With all this talk of recession, all this mutter of doom and gloom and the dark heavy clouds of recession that seem to gathering speed as I type, I thought i should post something as sombre as the prevailing mood. She came from Greece she had a thirst for knowledge, she studied sculpture at Saint Martin's College, that's where I, caught her eye. She told me that her Dad was loaded, I said "In that case I'll have a rum and coca-cola." She said "Fine." and in thirty seconds time she said, "I want to live like common people, I want to do whatever common people do, I want to sleep with common people, I want to sleep with common people, like you." Well what else could I do - I said "I'll see what I can do." I took her to a supermarket, I don't know why but I had to start it somewhere, so it started there. I said pretend you've got no money, she just laughed and said, "Oh you're so funny." I said "yeah? Well I can't see anyone else smiling in here. Are you sure you want to live like common people, you want to see whatever common people see, you want to sleep with common people, you want to sleep with common people, like me." But she didn't understand, she just smiled and held my hand. Rent a flat above a shop, cut your hair and get a job. Smoke some fags and play some pool, pretend you never went to school. But still you'll never get it right, cos when you're laid in bed at night, watching roaches climb the wall, if you call your Dad he could stop it all. You'll never live like common people, you'll never do what common people do, you'll never fail like common people, you'll never watch your life slide out of view, and dance and drink and screw, because there's nothing else to do. Sing along with the common people, sing along and it might just get you through, laugh along with the common people, laugh along even though they're laughing at you, and the stupid things that you do. Because you think that poor is cool. -Jarvis Crocker (Pulp) Booms and busts come and go, but the rich can just easily ask their Daddies to stop it all, can they. One positive (or negative, depending on your point-of-view) aspect of this impending economic disaster, is that I will finally get to see the true performance of the nation's tertiary business institutes. Reading the glowing reports about the success of business graduates, that I was almost fooled into thinking that a unemployed business graduate had gone the way of the dodo. Does SMU really produce such quality graduates that are eagerly snapped up by the working world? Then how about NUS, with its recently improved rankings that resulted in another round of "world-class university" hoopla released by the university's PR department. As for NTU, read on. The Straits Times Youthink section had a poll on their blog - [The Unabashedly Shallow Poll] Beauty is only faculty-deep!The poll was to find out which faculty students had the prettiest faces.(I would like to salute the Straits Times here for finally reading the pulse of the youth, atleast they managed to figure out what our nation's future leaders nowadays look out for when they ponder over which university to enroll at.) And poll results showed that............. (drum roll please) Only 2.6% of pollsters thought that NTU had "the most physically attractive individuals" (notice how they carefully managed to evade using the word "beauty" here) Never mind the fact that the majority of students voted for an institution other than their own, but 2.6% is just plain pathetic. 35.9% thought that SMU had the best-lookers and apparently business faculty has the best looking guys as well. Hmm... Gotta start hitting the gyms and cutting down on food, or they might just call me Les Grossman when I step foot into the SMU BIZ! |
